Free Online Softwash Training
"I have learned more about softwashing by viewing your website than I did over the 2 day course that I attended!" Sean Gilsenan, Excel Cleaning www.excelcleaning.info
On this website we offer free guidance for the safe professional use of Benz Softwash professional cleaning products based on our experience of running a hands-on softwashing business for several years.
Training in the professional application of pestides & herbicides
There are no government certified training courses specifically geared towards the application of biocides for softwashing (Benz Bio Cleanze and Lightning Cleanze are both classified and government approved biocides).
And there are no guidelines from the government, HSE (Health & Safety Executive) or PRCD (Irish Pesticide Registration & Controls Division) as to what softwash training should include. This is why we put together our comprehensive online softwash training resources.
There are two different UK regulations that are relevant to the softwashing industry:
- The BPR (Biocidal Product Regulations)
- The 1986 Control of Pesticide Regulations.
Under BPR (Biocidal Product Regulations) a contractor needs "training".
However the softwashing industry is not currently governed by these regulations but by the 1986 Control of Pesticide Regulations.
To quote from the 1986 regulations:
"Any person who uses a pesticide shall take all reasonable precautions to protect the health of human beings, creatures and plants, to safeguard the environment and in particular to avoid pollution of water.
"No person shall use a pesticide in the course of business unless he has received adequate instruction and guidance in the safe, efficient and humane use of pesticides and is competent for the duties which he is called upon to perform."
Clearly we ourselves could not officially certify anyone as "competent" just because they have read and viewed the information on our website.
However, if a contractor believes they have "received adequate instruction and guidance" and are now competent for the work they envisage carrying out – by assimilating the information they have gleaned from our website – then that contractor could choose to deem themselves competent in the use of biocides in their softwashing business.
Professional government certification in the safe use of pesticides and herbicides
Although not specifically focused on softwashing, a recognised qualification authorised by the UK government is the certification course: Pa1 - Safe use of pesticdes
Googling using the name of the course as a search term will bring up a number of training providers.

Btw: Pa1 is the first of many professional qualifications you can get for applying pesticides. They tend to be geared towards agricultural applications but some information will be valid for non-agricultural products such as the softwash biocides we sell.
Talking to the companies who supply this training will offer further clarification.
A contractor who completes the training, especially If they have employees, will place themselves in good standing with the HSE and PRCD.
COSSH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health ): As part of a company's risk assessment, a full COSSH assessment should be carried out. This is not as difficult as it may seem and excellent guidance is given here by the HSE: http://www.hse.gov.uk/coshh
We supply COSHH assessment templates for our customers to use, in our Product Documentation Pack.
